“Ikigai is a Japanese concept referring to something that gives a person a sense of purpose, a reason for living.” – Wikipedia
“Ikigai is doing the work that feels like fun” – Matt Kent
You have a passion. There is the thing you find yourself day dreaming about. And it’s not something lame like long walks on the beach. It’s weird. It’s uniquely you. I like automating, because I’m lazy. I will spend 12 hours figuring out how to turn a light on and off from my phone. Because I’m weird. I fall asleep thinking about it. I read about it on the internet. I dream about it.
And yet, I ended up making supplements. Did I breathe supplements? Dream about supplements? No. And so I was always fighting myself to do more work.
When you apply the principle of Ikigai, you start to take your passion, you become good at it, and you find a way to get paid for it. For me, my automating passion became optimising. I optimise my inbox. I optimise ordering systems. I optimise marketing. That way I can be lazy.
What about you? What do you love, that you are good at, that you can make money from? You’d be surprised. Let’s take baking. How many bakers are on the Fortune 500 list? What a silly idea.
Enter Candace Nelson. She founded a cupcake business after she realised she didn’t enjoy investment banking. And she is now a guest shark on Shark Tank worth over $10 million.
What about cooking? Have you met Gordon Ramsay? He’s worth about $220 million.
What about sewing? Who makes money sewing? Ben Francis used his Pizza Hut job earnings at age 19 to buy a sewing machine and start his fitness apparel company. It was called Gymshark and he is now worth $1.3 billion.
Start thinking about what you love, what you would do for free, and do it. The money will come. And I’ll help you figure out how.
